IPTV buffering: what actually causes it, and how to fix it

Buffering is nearly always one of five things. Work through them in order and most people are watching again within ten minutes.

Buffering feels like a problem with the service. Usually it is a problem between the service and your screen. Work through these in order.

1. Your Wi-Fi, not your internet

Run a speed test on the device you watch on, standing where it normally sits. A router two rooms away through a brick wall can turn a 300 Mbps connection into 8 Mbps at the TV. An ethernet cable, or moving the router, fixes more buffering than anything else on this list.

2. The player's buffer setting

Most players ship with a small buffer. Raising it to 3–5 seconds trades a slightly slower channel change for a much steadier picture. In IPTV Smarters this is under Settings → Player → Buffer size.

3. Too many screens

Streams count against the number of connections on your plan. A phone left playing in another room counts. Close what you are not watching.

4. An overloaded device

A first-generation Firestick running three apps at once will stutter on 4K no matter how fast your line is. Restart the device, close background apps, and drop to the HD version of the channel if there is one.

5. Your provider's peak-hour capacity

If the first four are clean and it still stutters between 7pm and 11pm, the bottleneck is upstream. Tell support the channel, the time and your speed test result — that is enough for us to move you to a different server.

When to ask for help

If you have worked through this list and it still buffers, message us with the channel name, the time it happened and your speed test result. That is normally enough to identify the cause on the first reply.
